On page 6 of the Introduction to Geomagic Squares (Intro) I lamented my failed search for a fully magic 2×2 geomagic square, a quarry pursued, on and off, over the past nine years. Yesterday (6 Jan. 2011) Frank Tinkelenberg, author of the geomagic star on the previous page (p. 53), succeeded in finding such a square where all others have failed. His result (one of four examples based on the same idea) is shown above. Note the use of both disconnected pieces and disconnected target. The next question therefore becomes whether there exists a solution using connected pieces and target? In the meantime, I salute Frank’s brilliant ingenuity in finally settling what had become a major open question.
